San Diego Sidewalk Claim: $35M Lawsuit After Serious Fall

A 70-year-old man has filed a $35 million claim against the City of San Diego after allegedly tripping over the exposed metal base of a removed parking meter on a sidewalk in Mission Hills, California. According to his attorney, William Berman, the fall left the man unconscious and caused serious neck and back fractures that now require continuous medical care. The claim follows the May incident and could lead to a civil lawsuit if the city does not respond.

According to local reports, the parking meter had been removed more than a year earlier, but its metal base remained protruding about one to two inches above the sidewalk. Berman argued that the city failed to eliminate a known hazard and warned that similar bases may exist in other neighborhoods.

The City of San Diego has declined to comment on the individual claim because of potential litigation. The case comes as city officials continue to face scrutiny over public liability costs and sidewalk safety, with infrastructure maintenance remaining a major public concern.

The incident has also sparked discussion across social media, where users expressed sympathy for the injured man while debating the size of the compensation request and the city’s responsibility to maintain safe public walkways. The legal process is still in its early stages, and no court ruling has been issued.
