In October 1973, while Israelis were celebrating Yom Kippur, Egyptian air forces bombarded their strongholds, forcing them to flee in their underwear, suffering a major defeat. Fast forward to 2023, the same scene of fleeing in underwear repeated itself during the Al-Aqsa Flood operation. And now, on the first of October 2024, Hezbollah began attacking Israel in an operation called “Khaybar,” making October a nightmare for them. With the beginning of October, Israel’s painful memories resurface as the Arab world recalls its victories that have inflicted defeats on the occupation throughout history. في شهر أكتوبر من عام 1973 كان يحتفل الإسرائيليين بعيد الغفران ليجدوا الطيران المصري يدك معاقلهم ويخرجوا بملابسهم الداخلية ويلقون هزيمة كبيرة وفي عام2023 في نفس الشهر يتكرر مشهد الخروج بالملابس الداخلية ولكن في طوفان الأقصي، وفي الأول من أكتوبر من عام 2024 بدأت حزب الله في ضرب إسرائيل في موقعة أطلقوا عليها خيبر، ليصبح هذا الشهر كابوس بالنسبة لهم، و مع بداية شهر أكتوبر، تتجدد الذكريات المؤلمة لإسرائيل، حيث يستعيد العالم العربي انتصاراته التي ألحقت الهزائم بالاحتلال عبر التاريخ، من حرب أكتوبر 1973 التي كسرت فيها مصر وسوريا شوكة الاحتلال، إلى عملية “طوفان الأقصى” التي نفذتها كتائب عز الدين القسام ضد المستوطنات الإسرائيلية في غزة العام الماضي، أصبح أكتوبر رمزًا لتكرار الهزائم التي تُثقل كاهل الاحتلال عامًا بعد عام.

October has become synonymous with the defeats that Israel has suffered in Arab consciousness. Activists describe this month as a turning point in the history of the Arab-Israeli conflict. One Palestinian activist wrote on the X platform: “On October 6, the Egyptians defeated you. On October 7, the Palestinians wounded you. And in October, the Lebanese will discipline you.” These words summarize how October has turned into a month where Israel bears the weight of its consecutive losses while Arab resistance continues.

يعتبر شهر أكتوبر مرادفًا للهزائم التي لحقت بإسرائيل في الوعي العربي، يتحدث الناشطون عن هذا الشهر باعتباره نقطة تحول في تاريخ الصراع العربي الإسرائيلي. أحد الناشطين الفلسطينيين كتب على منصة إكس: “6 أكتوبر هزمكم المصري. 7 أكتوبر أوجعكم الفلسطيني. وفي أكتوبر سيؤدبكم اللبناني.” هذه الكلمات تلخص كيف أن أكتوبر تحول إلى شهر تحمل فيه إسرائيل ثقل خسائرها المتتالية، في حين تستمر المقاومة العربية.

The October War of 1973

On October 6, 1973, Egypt and Syria launched a surprise attack on Israel, which is known as the October War. The Egyptian Armed Forces successfully crossed the Suez Canal and dismantled the Bar Lev Line, which was considered an impenetrable fortress. This war wasn’t just a military battle; it was a pivotal moment that brought the Arabs back to the arena of victories after a series of setbacks. The operation was described as a “military miracle” and marked the first Arab victory against Israel’s expansionist ambitions in the region.

في السادس من أكتوبر 1973، شنت مصر وسوريا هجومًا مباغتًا على إسرائيل، في ما يُعرف بحرب أكتوبر. تمكنت القوات المسلحة المصرية من عبور قناة السويس وتحطيم خط بارليف الذي كان يُعتبر حصنًا منيعًا. تلك الحرب لم تكن مجرد معركة عسكرية، بل كانت لحظة فاصلة أعادت العرب إلى ساحة الانتصارات بعد سلسلة من النكسات. ووصفت هذه العملية بأنها “المعجزة العسكرية” وحققت أول انتصار عربي ضد المشروع الإسرائيلي في المنطقة.

Al-Aqsa Flood Operation

On October 7 of last year, Al-Qassam Brigades announced the launch of the “Al-Aqsa Flood” operation, targeting 11 Israeli military bases and 22 settlements around the Gaza Strip. The operation resulted in the killing of around 1,500 Israelis, including soldiers and settlers, injuring thousands, and capturing dozens. This operation came in response to the brutal siege imposed on Gaza and Israel’s attempts to liquidate the Palestinian cause and impose control over Al-Aqsa Mosque. Israel responded with a large-scale assault on Gaza, committing massacres against civilians, the majority of whom were women and children.

في السابع من أكتوبر من العام الماضي، أعلنت كتائب عز الدين القسام عن عملية “طوفان الأقصى” التي استهدفت 11 قاعدة عسكرية و22 مستوطنة إسرائيلية محاذية لقطاع غزة. العملية أسفرت عن مقتل حوالي 1500 إسرائيلي، ما بين جنود ومستوطنيين، وإصابة الآلاف، إلى جانب أسر العشرات. جاءت العملية كرد على الحصار الجائر المفروض على غزة ومحاولات إسرائيل تصفية القضية الفلسطينية والسيطرة على المسجد الأقصى. وردّت إسرائيل بهجوم واسع النطاق على قطاع غزة، مستهدفة المدنيين في مجازر مروعة.

Escalation in Lebanon

Amid these painful memories, the Israeli army announced a ground incursion into southern Lebanon, under the pretext of dismantling Hezbollah’s infrastructure. This followed a significant Israeli military escalation in Lebanon, which targeted infrastructure and resulted in hundreds of deaths and thousands of injuries. In response, Hezbollah launched a series of operations under the name “Khaybar,” firing rockets at Israeli military positions and even Tel Aviv, further complicating the situation.

وفي ظل هذه الذكريات، أعلن الجيش الإسرائيلي عن عملية توغل بري في جنوب لبنان بحجة القضاء على البنية التحتية لحزب الله. جاء ذلك بعد تصعيد عسكري كبير من جانب إسرائيل على لبنان، استهدف البنية التحتية وأدى إلى سقوط مئات الشهداء وآلاف الجرحى. لكن حزب الله رد على هذا العدوان بإطلاق سلسلة من العمليات تحت مسمى “خيبر”، حيث استهدفت صواريخه مواقع عسكرية إسرائيلية، وحتى تل أبيب، مما زاد من تعقيد المشهد.

October is no longer just a memory of military defeats but has become a symbol of continuous resistance against the occupation. From Egypt to Palestine and Lebanon, challenges to Israel are renewed, and October remains a witness to the Arab world’s unwavering resolve in confronting the occupation. It seems that this month will continue to be a recurring nightmare for Israel, bringing with it memories of defeats and the enduring hope for liberation.
